After nearly 35 years in the roofing industry, we’ve seen many of the same mistakes made by homeowners when it comes to roof repair and replacement.

From the costly to the comical, we wanted to share the most common with 3 Mistakes Homeowners Make With Their Roof.

1. Doing It Yourself Without Any Roofing Experience

The DIY model to save a few bucks is the most common mistake we see. The cost of doing things right can sound expensive, but not when you consider the cost of doing them wrong. Roofing is a skill developed over time, best learned by hands-on experience. We would not recommend the first, second, or even third home you attempt to tear off and re-roof be your own!

There are many situations where we have had to rescue a homeowner from a roofing project they started but were unable to finish. Whether this was due to sheer inexperience, larger problems exposed mid-project or suffering an injury, the cost of emergency roof repair or service was not favored over hiring a professional in the first place.

2. Buying Shingles Not Recommended By Your Roofer

While visually aesthetic shingles (or the least expensive) are often in the buyers’ mind, your roofing contractor has a better knowledge of these product lines than your initial glance at sales brochures. They’ve had their hands on them, installed hundreds of times, and witness first hand how they perform over time working with the same homeowners.

CertainTeed Organic shingles were a popular brand in the 80’s and 90’s known for their affordability and nice appearance. Naturally, they became a popular choice. Unfortunately, 8-10 years later, many homeowners found cracking, curling, leaking, blistering and degranulation from a defective product. While not every situation like this can be avoided, choosing a brand like Owens Corning that has historically put out high-quality defunct-free roofing products can save you the hassle of insurance claims, fighting for reimbursement, the inconvenience of re-roofing.

3. Hiring An Inexperienced Roofing Contractor

The process of purchasing a new roof isn’t the most exciting- but it is often one of the largest long-term investments you will make in your home. Taking the time to research roofing companies, meet with each, request and review multiple bids, can really pay off by finding the contractor most fit for your budget and expectations.

How long has the roofing company been in business? Do they have positive reviews online? Do they offer a warranty on labor? These are important questions to ask before starting the process.
