Make Sure Your Holiday Surprises Don’t Include Home Repair

As you set the Thanksgiving table and place the final decorations around the house, it’s looking like it’s almost time for the company to arrive.

There’s family coming in from out of town, and the turkey is in the oven. You might be willing to overlook Aunt Mildred’s stuffing, and what the dog did to the cranberries last year when no one else was looking, but that’s your likely threshold for Thanksgiving holiday surprises. You can even tolerate Uncle Ron and his political discussions.

Hosting Thanksgiving dinner is not the moment for an ugly home repair surprise to rear its head. To prevent that scenario from taking place, let’s look at a few common problems to address.

Roof leaks

If you’re noticing a drip drip from the ceiling, that is a moment to act right away. A stain that runs across the ceiling or down a wall may also be due to a roof leak. If you know how to track down the leak, and do a quick shingle repair , it won’t take much time. Otherwise, it’s probably a wise idea to have a roofer out to the house before uncle Ben wonders why you didn’t do this before everyone came over.

Water Infiltration

Water can seep through for a number of reasons. It can be a ventilation or insulation issue, or it could be improper sealing of roof sheathing. It could even be due to accumulating snow. As soon as you see the first signs of moisture, it’s a good idea to contact a roofer.

Gutter failure

You always want water flowing away from the house, and this is how your gutter system should work. For this reason, it’s important to keep your gutters clean. Make sure that falling leaves aren’t preventing water from flowing. You’ll also want to make sure there are no standing pools of water around the exterior of your home.

Siding problems

Old or improperly installed siding can also lead to a disaster. If you’re noticing water in or around your walls, it’s time to have a professional out to your house. There are many high-quality siding brands on the market that add massive curb appeal.
